The purpose of the Aboriginal Family Navigator program is to enhance service provision, provide advocacy, decrease children in care, and improve accountability through a family-centered approach that focuses on meeting the need of both clients and families.

The Aboriginal Family Navigator program is to provide support and guidance to aboriginal families pertaining to their child(ren) or grandchildren if they are potentially to be involved with the Ministry or are in government care.

Program Goals:

  • To reduce the amount of children in care;
  • To ensure culturally appropriate services are provided to our Aboriginal Families;
  • Collaborate with local social services agencies, Urban organizations and First Nation Bands.

The Aboriginal Family Navigator will ensure that aboriginal families:

  • Receive service that is culturally appropriate and sensitive;
  • Understand the family court process and ensure their voices are heard;
  • Have access to community resources or services;
  • Have access to legal education and/or information regarding their child/grandchildren in government care;
  • Are informed on the needs and rights to legal assistance.

Role of Aboriginal Family Navigator

  • Develop and Maintain Community Relationships;
  • Assist Families to Access Supports & Participate in Planning;
  • Provide Families with Advocacy Support and Information;
  • Liaise between Community, Families and External Professionals;
  • Support Development and Ongoing Operation of Community Structures.
