Design/logo Details:
The design/logo developed for the Sasamans Society (previously North Island Wellness Society) is called ‘Calling Out’. This design is an older eagle calling out to the younger eagle to come home. I feel that this design depicts what Sasamans Society is all about with respect to the vision around taking care of our own children and having a safe environment for them to grow and live in. I have chosen the crest of an eagle because it is a sacred and wise bird, representing, good times to come. They are a symbol of power and prestige. The eagle down is a symbol of peace and friendship. All of these symbols and representations of an eagle, I feel are evident throughout the Sasamans Society.

Mulidzas – J. Curtis Wilson
Mulidzas is the traditional name handed to Curtis Wilson during a family Potlatch held in 2001. Curtis was born, raised and currently lives in Campbell River with his wife, daughter and son. His family comes from the four corners of the Kwakwaka’wakw territory. Curtis’s paternal grandparents come from Axwamees (Wakeman Sound), and Wei Wai Kai (Cape Mudge); my maternal grandparents come from Ba’as (Blunden Harbour), and Wei Wai Kum (Campbell River).
Curtis received a Bachelor of Arts degree in First Nations Studies from Malaspina University/College in 2002. He has been a part of the Laichwiltach Culture Group for many years and is very adamant about learning his culture and heritage. Curtis continues to teach the younger generations about the culture, songs and dances.
Curtis was sketching and drawing in his teens, but never started learning how to carve until the late age of 18. He has been learning how to carve for a number of years now and will continue to learn for many more years to come. He started to carve at small a shed built by his grandfather Sam Henderson Sr., under the instruction of many of his uncles and cousins. Curtis utilizes many of the techniques and styles from each and every one of his uncles and cousins. In learning the old styles of his grandfather Sam Henderson Sr., and the new styles of his uncles and cousins, Curtis continues to develop a unique style of his own.
Curtis’s experiences in artwork are expanding every day and he is constantly learning new techniques that will help him expand his abilities with his art. Curtis continues to learn new aspects of his culture and heritage every day and one of his goals in life is to learn as much about his culture and heritage, so he can pass it on to the next generations.
